Will Lifting Weights Prevent My Height Growth?

This may seem like a strange question, I mean can there really be any type of a connection between your height and an overuse of weight training? It just so happens that there is.

Consider one of the main forces that results in holding our height back, which is the force of gravity itself. This is proven in many different ways, such as the measurements of astronauts while in space, a gravity free environment, and also how our own height is affected when we go to sleep and experience an extended period without gravity pulling down on us.

So we know gravity is working to keep us down at every turn. Now consider constantly adding additional weight to our frames, in the form of weight lifting. Now we have that much more force bearing us down. Weight lifters often train for a good 30 minutes or more per day, which is a sizable chunk of time in which theyre carrying extra baggage.

Not only can the weight lifting itself prove disastrous for your height, but by working out overly much and developing large muscles, this increased physical frame can also give the illusion of making you appear shorter. A real double whammy on the height scale.

Of course this doesn't mean weight training itself is bad, only so far as how gravity affects it. In fact weight training is one of the best methods that can be used to increase your bodys production of growth hormone, promoting height and muscle growth.

Getting away from that nasty force of gravity is best accomplished by sitting or lying down to do your weight training. Of course if youre using a significant amount of weight while lying down, you may want to be sure to have a spotter nearby.

In a final twist, there are ankle weights which can be strapped to your ankles, and these are also considered a form of weight training, though of course not targeting the area most weight lifters go after, that being their biceps. These ankle weights are great for training your legs, which can speed up the process of stretching your legs out through kicking or other leg related exercise routines.

So while some forms of weight lifting can indeed have a bad effect on any attempts to gain height, it by no means implies that you need to avoid weight lifting at all costs. Get yourself a good weight lifting bench and you can lift to your heart's content, without gravity butting its head in on your parade.
