How to Buy Ballet Shoes

by Sarah Wilkiamson

Having made the decision to start ballet dancing class, you need to make a list of things you need. It doesn't take a great deal of ballet knowledge to realize that the most important thing you're going to need are ballet shoes. Don't just buy the first ballet shoes you see on the shelf however. Your ballet shoes must fit perfectly if you are to be able to dance to your full potential.

Ballet shoes are important because they both support and protect your feet when you dance. They are specially designed to do this, and so you need to ensure that you wear ballet shoes and not just soft gymnastic type slippers. As much ballet work comes through the toes, ballet shoes are made with pads at the toes so that injury to the toes is prevented when performing.

Not all ballet shoes are created equal. Different types of ballet shoes are made from different materials and are recommended for different kinds of ballet dancers.

1. Slip-on ballet shoes. These are made from a soft material and are easy to put on and off. They are perfect for beginners. Once you are more advanced, then you can use Pointe ballet shoes. These are made with even more protection around the toes and help to support you when you are balance "en Pointe".

2. Full sole shoes are usually made of suede or leather. This is recommended for beginners since it supports the feet but is flexible enough for movement. This will help strengthen the feet of the dancer which will allow them to dance more advanced choreography. Split sole ballet shoes are used by more advanced dancers. These soles cover the toe and the heel for easier shaping of the feet. It allows the feet to bend and flex at higher degrees. Your movements will now be defined when you use a split sole shoe.

Tips for Ballet Shoe Buying

The material of the shoes is also important when selecting the right ballet shoes. Leather shoes might be tight at first, but as you use them more often, it will begin to stretch and fit perfectly and more comfortably. This is more durable than any other material used for ballet shoes. Canvas on the other hand provides more protection on the feet. These have a higher number of pleats that can fit for wider feet. Although this may provide support for your feet, canvas shoes really do not stretch. Canvas ballet shoes are priced cheaper compare to leather ballet shoes.

When shopping for ballet shoes make sure that they fit correctly. Never buy a pair of ballet shoes without first trying them on in the store. Your ballet shoes need to support your feet and they can't do that unless they are a perfect fit. A pair of ballet shoes that is too large will have inadequate support, and a pair that is too small will create a stress on your feet and toes. There needs to be plenty of room for your feet to move, without them feeling as if they're going to fall off! Try them on and balance on the balls of your feet - if your feet feel comfortable doing this, then the ballet shoes should be perfect for you.

Even if you are a first timer, shopping for ballet shoes should be priority. You need to take note of the kind of ballet shoes that you would want to wear. Remember that you need to be comfortable in your ballet shoes and they need to fit properly so that you can move with comfort and ease.
